New Fellows Program: Public Library Leaders Learn

March 18, 2013 3:07 PM -

People from many economic backgrounds and ages are using the library in growing numbers, and in fact, studies show more often during tough economic times. Besides remaining relevant, libraries are vibrant community-based repositories offering content, services, technology, and space. Professional librarians are needed.

But public libraries are at a critical crossroad, with the majority of library CEOs and senior administrators set to retire soon, according to a 2008 Canadian Library Association report. Preparing senior replacements is essential, yet Canada doesn’t have a systematic preparation program for that upper echelon. That is, it didn’t until November 2012.

Amber Wilde Memorial Lecture a Stunning Evening

January 20, 2012 3:48 PM -

The iSchool Institute was pleased to host the first Memorial Lecture for Amber Wilde (MISt 2009) on 19 January. Memories and tributes were paid by Neil Arsenault and Carol Matyas of Amber’s workplace, the Brampton Public Library system, and Faculty of Information Senior Fellow Professor Wendy Newman introduced our speaker, Stephen Abram (the Institute’s 2010 Outstanding Teacher, and a celebrated visionary and strategist for libraries).

An overflow crowd was spellbound as Stephen weaved together five key actions for libraries to take to prosper and grow in today’s difficult environment, all illustrated by referring to “The Wizard of Oz” as a framework for understanding and integrating the emotional world of librarianship with the demands placed upon library leadership to evolve in the face of technology and to shift from thinking of things (nouns) to activities and results (verbs) to better serve their communities. It was a superb evening and a wonderful tribute to Amber and her memory.

Stephen Abram has made his presentation slides available to those who could not be there via his highly popular and well-read blog, Stephen’s Lighthouse.

We are pleased to have been able to host this event. Those who would like to support the Faculty of Information in creating more stellar alumnae like Amber Wilde may wish to contribute to the scholarship fund being organized in her name. We urge you to contact Robin Kester if you would care to contribute.

Instructor Appreciation Night recognizes Two Great Instructors

October 26, 2011 3:01 PM -

The annual Instructor Appreciation Night was held on 25 October 2011 at the University of Toronto’s Faculty Club, bringing the iSchool Institute’s instructors together to celebrate their community. Instructors of the Year are chosen based on student feedback, both via course evaluation forms and follow up interactions.

This year, two Instructors were honoured:

Connie Crosby
Connie is the creator and co-instructor of our Introduction to Social Media course, and the author of a well-received book on the subject published for use by professional Librarians. Students not only praised her ability to cover extensive amounts of ground in the course — a common comment was “this should be two days, not one!”, due to the wealth of information shared – but students also leave with their social media presence established and ready to use in their business or employer’s interests.

Ulla de Stricker
Ulla offered two different programs during the past year, and in both worked with co-instructors, helping to grow the instructor community at the Institute. The student bodies for Ulla’s course on Information Entrepreneurship, and on Information Audit, were very different, but both had the same strong positive feedback to offer. Ulla also published a professional book in the past year, and frequently spends time throughout the academic year working with the Masters’ students in the Faculty of Information to help them prepare for the search for work.

Both are great assets, and we at the Institute are proud to be associated with them!

Museum Leadership and Development starts Nov. 1

October 04, 2011 2:59 PM - Courses

Are you part of the leadership team in a cultural institution or not-for-profit organization? Sharpen your skills in our new program, Museum Leadership and Development: a Strategic Approach to Training and Development Integration.

Meeting weekly starting November 1, this program offers attendees the opportunity to work with peers on team building, strategy development, risk management, establish vision, mission and value statements, and hone their management skills. Guest speakers in the program will be drawn from the museum & gallery sector, but the material is suited for anyone working in an organization serving the public and dependent upon donations and grant funding.

The Institute recognizes that new managers and team leads in large institutions may correspond to Directors in small organizations: the sessions will ensure that groups are formed with scale and complexity of the participants in mind.

To learn more, and to enrol today, click here for the description and registration page. We hope to see you there!
